Students often consider a college internship as an added bonus to a resume. They may seek out an internship solely because they want to add it to their resume, and not for the rewards it will bring them. While having an internship on their resume will certainly help them get noticed, treating an internship as merely a resume filler will not help students take in all an internship has to offer. Going in with the wrong attitude means that students will not take as much out of the experience as they should. Treat a college internship as a valuable tool for gaining new skills and a new perspective that few students have the privilege of gaining. It will often mean the difference between a well-prepared student and an ill-prepared student.
The presence of an internship on a resume, as mentioned earlier, will not land a student a job. It may get them an interview, but interviewers will be able to tell which students took something away from the internship, and which did not. Talking to so many recent graduates, many interviewers become pros at seeing through a student's use of words to make their experience sound more exciting and engaging than it really was. Stretching the truth or exaggerating the experiences at an internship are common tactics used by students who suddenly regret not taking more out of their internship. They may lie about duties or stretch the truth when talking about the new skills they were able to acquire.
So when finding a college internship, be sure that the program allows students to gain a new perspective on life and the working world. Also, be sure that it allows students the chance to develop new skills and build upon existing ones. This will help students get noticed by interviewers and allow them to hopefully land the job they want after college.
